Aloe Vera for IC/BPS

Aloe Vera for IC/BPS

By Dr. Amanda Olson DPT, PRPC

What is Interstitial Cystitis (IC)/Bladder Pain Syndrome (BPS)?

Chronic bladder conditions that can feel like a severe urinary tract infection (UTI). Symptoms include a frequent and painful urge to urinate, pelvic pain, and discomfort during and after intercourse. Although there is no known cure, studies on alternative medicine show that Freeze-dried Aloe Vera can significantly relieve IC symptoms.

Read on to learn everything you need to know about treating IC/BPS with aloe vera supplements.

What Causes IC?

While researchers have not yet pinpointed the exact cause of IC, studies suggest that it may originate from a physical breakdown in the bladder lining, also referred to as the GAG layer.  Once the GAG layer is disrupted, certain ‘triggers’ can cause IC flares.

What is the GAG Layer?

A mucus-like surface of the bladder which acts as a protective lining to prevent irritating toxins found in urine from affecting the bladder. When there is a disruption or breakdown in the GAG layer, toxins can more easily permeate the bladder’s sensory nerves, resulting in intense bladder pain and urinary urgency.

What are Flares?

Described as a sudden worsening of the symptoms associated with IC. Flares can last for a few hours or several days, depending on what triggered them, but they might not feel the same for every patient. Symptoms such as pain in the pelvic area, needing to pee frequently, and the burning sensation when urinating are common in most patients; however, the intensity and duration of IC flares can vary from person to person.

What are IC Triggers?

Usually include specific foods (especially citric fruits & caffeine), stress, long journeys, tight clothing, strenuous exercise, certain medications, sex, and fluctuations in hormones.

Flare Relief

Addressing an IC flare sooner rather than later will ensure it passes faster and symptoms don’t get the chance to intensify. With no specific cure for IC, most patients agree that a combination of an IC diet, sufficient water intake, heat or ice packs, warm baths, physiotherapy pelvic massages, and freeze-dried aloe vera supplements work best.

How Does Aloe Vera Help?

Aloe vera’s natural anti-inflammatory, antibiotic, and anti-fungal properties help to soothe the burning sensation and sensitive skin associated with IC, as well as reduce pain.

In addition, aloe vera contains D-mannose molecules, which scientists believe can prevent e-coli bacteria from sticking to the bladder walls. This essentially means that harmful bacteria stick to the sugary D-mannose molecules and are flushed out of the body in urine, instead of permeating the sensory nerves of the bladder and causing an IC flare.

Intimate Rose has added D-mannose to its organic aloe vera supplements to encourage this natural elimination of harmful bacteria. We’ve also added alkalizing calcium to buffer out acidity.

Aloe vera naturally contains a myriad of vitamins, as well as magnesium and zinc; all of which provide nourishment to healthy and not-so-healthy cells, as well as aid in bladder control.

How Many Aloe Vera Capsules Does it Take to Treat IC/BPS?

Just three capsules per day of our Freeze-Dried Aloe Vera with added D-Mannose & Calcium will help to support bladder health and manage IC flares. Patients should see an improvement within as little as three months.

Although there is currently no cure for IC/BPS, freeze-dried aloe vera supplements are proving effective in managing symptoms and improving overall bladder health. In addition to aloe vera supplements, it helps to follow an IC-friendly diet, drink plenty of water to flush out toxins, and take warm sitz baths to soothe irritation and sensitivity.

If you are considering taking an aloe vera supplement, it is always best to consult with your healthcare provider to ensure that it will not react with any other medications you are taking.
